Zombie by Iain Rob Wright Review

The Cursed Manuscripts #2

When I hear the word zombie, I don’t think of the walking dead going around eating people. I think of the song by The Cranberries. But this Zombie, by horror writer Iain Rob Wright, is about those forementioned flesh eating walking dead.

Zombie is the second book in The Cursed Manuscripts series.

The Cursed Manuscripts: on December 21, 2012, according to the Mayan Calendar, the world was supposed to end. It didn’t. But on that day, 113 mysterious manuscripts were discovered around the world, each one written in blood by an unknown author. After several dozen unexplained deaths befell the finders of said manuscripts, a decision was made to lock them up for good in a secret vault beneath the Vatican. It is said that anyone who reads the stories will die, and as such they are now referred to as ‘The Cursed Manuscripts.’

Manuscript 12.20-02, discovered June 2021 in Stoke, United Kingdom, by teenager, Kyle Smith, who found it abandoned on the seat of a bus. Kyle Smith was hit by a car and killed two days later. The following text was found written on an unsent text message found on his phone. There was no recipient.

In December 2020, new manuscripts started turning up around the world.

If you find one, do not read it.

Danny and Laura, a young married couple with a 3 year old daughter, have had an argument while visiting her parents. Danny has some anger issues and doesn’t like her dad so decides that they need to drive home in the middle of the night. They have been drinking and Danny really shouldn’t be driving, but Laura keeps quiet as otherwise that would make the long journey home so much worse. Until the argument continues anyway. But that is nothing as to what happens next.

When a van crashes in front of them and releases its deadly, brain dead cannibalistic maniac cargo, they are in a fight to survive. The zombies are let loose and are trying to eat them.

Overall, Zombie is an excellent story. I’m not a big lover of zombie stories but I really enjoyed this one as it has more going on than just the dead trying to eat the living. While it is a story of the flesh eating undead, it is also a story of a bullying, a controlling marriage and Laura’s need to escape that, as well as the carnage-causing zombies.

Zombie is a well-written spine-tingling thrilling adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A chilling, thrilling tale of zombies versus the exploration of human survival and resilience. A fight for survival, but how can you beat something that is already dead while being trapped in a broken down car in the small hours of the night on a deserted road?

Iain Rob Wright has created a story where the horror and creepy atmosphere reach out of the pages and grab you like a zombies tunnel-vision need for fresh meat. The novel’s blend of suspense, supernatural elements, and psychological depth ensures that it stands out in a crowded field. Whether you’re a long-time fan of zombie fiction or new to the genre, ‘Zombie’ by Iain Rob Wright is a thrilling addition to any bookshelf. The storytelling is fantastic.

A nerve-racking tale of horror and survival. A totally engrossing and enthralling tale.
