Discovering The World of Jesper Jinx

The world’s (un)luckiest prankster

Jinx

In our house there seem to be a lot or “pranks” occurring between the 9 and 12 year old. Recently we found toothpaste smeared on the handle of the eldests bedroom door. Whilst the youngest found this funny (and has still not owned up to it), no one else did (although secretly probably did)– luckily enough it was an inoffensive prank and easy to clean off. They seem to find these pranks on YouTube videos, but I would rather they found them in the vast array of children’s books they feature pranks and pranksters (especially as most are inoffensive).

We have hundreds of books filling bookshelves in our house, we just love reading. One series of books that we have on the shelf is very apt for prank-loving children and features plenty of sibling rivalry and pranks (or should I say failed pranks). This is the Jesper Jinx series by Finnish author Marko Kitti. If you haven’t heard of Jesper and his antics, well let me tell you, Jesper Jinx has to be the world’s (un)luckiest prankster, although I do find him and his failed pranks lots of fun to read about.

The Jesper Jinx series is ideally aimed at prank-loving readers aged 7+ but is so much fun that even as a lot older adult I really enjoy reading them (I do like to read a variety of different genres and authors). There are currently 8 books in the series with book #8, Get Famous, just released in September 2021. The series features juvenile humour, pranks, sibling rivalry, adventure and lots of fun.

The series so far (click on the links to read my reviews):

Jesper Jinx (Book #1)
Jesper Jinx and the Sneezing Season (Book #2)
Jesper Jinx and the Turkish Pepper (Book #3)
Jesper Jinx Goes Fishing (Book #4)
Jesper Jinx and the Scrumptious Snacks (Book #5)
Jesper Jinx’s Best Friend (Book #6)
Jesper Jinx and the Mouse Mayhem (Book #7)
Jesper Jinx Gets Famous (Book #8)

So who is Jesper Jinx and what is he about?

Well, Jesper Jinx is a typical 11-year-old boy who lives in the seaside town of Puffington Hill on the south coast of England. He lives with his mum, dad and his 12 year old sister, Melinda (who just happens to be his arch enemy and is a target for a lot of his pranks). Jesper, along with his best friend Oliver Oliverson, loves playing pranks but they inevitability go wrong and everything he touches usually ends up in disaster.

This series of books is actually a top-secret record of about Jesper’s life, family and pranks (and Jesper is NOT to know of their existence!). The stories contained within were told in confidence to his neighbour (who happens to also be the author of these books), the Silly Old Scribbler. If you do pick up a book to read, you are sworn to secrecy (and required to sign secrecy agreements to read any the books!). These books are made up of lots of short stories that will delight and entertain even the most reluctant of readers. Whether you are 7 or 107, Jesper’s juvenile pranks are hilarious.

If you have an avid reader in the house, or just trying to get a reluctant reader interested in reading, they will love Jesper’s antics, the books are packed with humour and pranks that inevitably go wrong. These books are very easy to read and digest, engaging the reader from the beginning with the involvement of signing the Secrecy Agreement and will not put off even the most reluctant of readers.

The Jesper Jinx series is sold in over 20 countries and has been translated into 6 different languages, so it is enjoyed all around the world – that many readers can’t be wrong (and as far as I know, Jesper is still very much unaware of the existence of these books so let’s keep it that way!). But don’t take my word for it, pick up one of the books today and see for yourself and enjoy all the fun and pranks with Jesper.
