As Nice As Pie by Gary Sheppard Review

Children's picture book

Gary Sheppard

As Nice As Pie is a children’s picture book written by Gary Sheppard (his debut picture book) and it has been very beautifully illustrated by Tim Budgen. It is published by Maverick Books.

As Nice As Pie is about a lady called Mavis (not a maths book and the mathematical constant 3.142, that is a completely different type of pi), who just loves cooking. She loves to share what she has cooked with the birds in her garden. While it started off with just one bird, it soon became hundreds on birds once word got out she fed them freshly, cooked delicious food! With so many birds now invading her garden she couldn’t cope with the birds demands food and taking advantage of her generosity. So, she comes up with a plan to teach the birds some manners and respect.

Overall, this 32 page paperback book is a wonderful children’s story. It is great for bedtime reading and helps teach about sharing, pride, manners, respect, teamwork, greed and not taking advantage of others and their generosity, so not only is it a very good read but it also has an excellent moral message. The story is told in rhyming text that children will find easy to read (and love having it read to them). The beautiful and colourful illustrations really bring the story to life, helping young readers really understand what is happening within the story.

As Nice As Pie is an excellent story about a friendly lady that wants to share her baking talents with others, until they start to take her for granted. It is very charming with its rhyming text, bright and colourful illustrations and has a good moral message, one that children will easily take something away from. I love it, as did the twins (who were 5 years old at the time) and it will make a great addition to any child’s library. I think it would also make an excellent book for nurseries and schools to teach about not taking other’s for granted and respect! With a retail price of £6.99, it is definitely value for money.

A wonderful story that children will adore and get a lot of enjoyment from.
