If You Were Me and Lived In… Elizabethan England by Carole P. Roman Review

An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time #8

Elizabethan England

Have you ever wondered how Elizabethans lived? Or maybe how they disposed of their waste or how they dressed? Well now you can find out in If You Were Me and Lived In… Elizabethan England by Carole P. Roman.

Carole P. Roman is a prolific children’s author that was written over 40 books and won over 100 awards. Among her works are the Captain No Beard series and the very educational If You Were Me and Lived In… series. I was delighted when I received the latest addition to this series, this time featuring civilisations rather than countries; Elizabethan England.

The If You Were Me and Lived In… series is split into two sections: Countries and Civilisations. Elizabethan England is from the civilisations series and seems to be aimed at an older child range as it is taken to a new level with more information, whereas the Country series seems to be aimed at younger children.

If You Were Me and Lived In… Elizabethan England takes us back to when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne, England as an emerging superpower exploring the world discovering new lands and the rise of the world’s most famous playwright; Sir William Shakespeare.

Elizabethan England was in the 16th Century era. This book covers facts from that time about wealth, class systems, housing and religion, features pages with famous people from the Elizabethan era and a glossary with pronunciation of some of the English words used.

At 50 page it is packed with a wealth of information (without overloading the reader), along with accompanying beautifully drawn illustrations, by Paula Tabor. It is a great educational read which not only delivers the facts but delivers them in an easy to read, understandable fashion with humour.

If You Were Me and Lived In… Elizabethan England is written in a format that children will understand without getting bored or overwhelmed with “boring” facts and sees them learning without reading dry history books. A great introduction to learning about old civilisations. Kids, parents and teachers will love it.
