Lastnight by Stephen Leather Review

Jack Nightingale Series #5

Lastnight

I love reading a good thriller, crime thrillers; psychological thrillers, action thrillers, supernatural thrillers etc… One of my favourite British thriller writer authors is Stephen Leather. He has written several book series, featuring Spider Shepherd, Jack Nightingale, Lex Harper and Inspector Zhang, and has also written lots of standalone novels. I love the Spider Shepherd novels, but if I had to pick my favourite series from his books, I think that it has to be the Jack Nightingale series, a supernatural thriller series.

Jack Nightingale is a private detective and in Lastnight he is back for the fifth time for another chilling supernatural thriller in the continuation of the Jack Nightingale series.

In Lastnight we see a serial killer on the loose. A serial killer with the taste for Goths, not just killing them but butchering them and skinning them. With such a disturbing case and the police getting nowhere fast, they call in Jack Nightingale for help as they desperately need something to go on to crack the case.

As Jack starts to investigate, he comes across a sinister reason behind the murders, all the Goths that have been murdered so far have a something in common and a child-sacrificing Satanist group, the Order of Nine Angels, is killing them for this reason and to protect their secrets.

As Jack digs deeper, getting closer to the killer, he finds himself in lots of danger along with his friends and family. Very soon people in his life start to die with a very ominous message left at each crime scene saying that the killer is coming for him. The only way Jack can stop all his friends and family stepping into the path of a deranged murderer is to go to the extreme and take his own life.

Overall, Stephen Leather’s Lastnight is a superb supernatural thriller and probably one of the best novels I have read in the Jack Nightingale series.

Lastnight is the age-old story of good versus evil. Stephen Leather has written an excellent and exhilarating thriller that involves Satanists, devils, evil spirits, gangsters, the police and of course Jack Nightingale, the private detective who has the ability to track and stop them using whatever means necessary. Jack has resources that the police don’t have and never will, using his resources based in this world and also the spirit world to do everything he can to stop the cult of the Order of Nine Angels and their extreme murders.

This supernatural thriller starts with the death of Jack Nightingale, and that is just the start of a very thrilling journey across two worlds.

Lastnight is an extraordinary, engaging and exciting very well written thriller that keeps you gripped and totally absorbed from the opening pages. Stephen Leather blends the supernatural, the occult and everyday life extremely well to create a very thrilling story. A very imaginative story that works on every level.

I would highly recommend it, Stephen Leather is a very talented writer.
